It all started around 25 years back; when the first ever website was launched. From modems with very slow connection speed to a super high speed of 43 terabytes per second; the landscape of internet has changed by leaps and bounds. It won’t be an understatement saying that the mankind is overwhelmed by this digital revolution, the way it has affected our daily lives. The way to where the internet is today, had its own share of bumps and speed-breakers.

It started at CERN, where people from universities all over the world, came with all kind of computer running different sort of programs. Transferring data from one computer was difficult as programs were not very compatible to each other. The necessity of something which can be read by all machines came up. Sir Tim Berners-Lee took this up and came up with World Wide Web. The first ever website (http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html) was created by him to group static documents, and was exclusively used by defense organizations and academic institutions, still exists today.

Let’s take a look at how the websites have evolved over this period of time. At a very initial stage, the internet speed was very slow and therefore the websites were lightweight suiting to the slow connection. These websites primarily consisted text. Later, the web designers started coming up with table based layout with a view to organize the content. This allowed the text to be divided into columns, rows etc. The graphical design elements, animations and GIFs also made entry into web designing at this period of time. Flash made an important breakthrough in web-designing, opening a world of possibilities which wasn’t possible hitherto with basic HTML. Flash became successful momentarily but later JavaScript / HTML5 replaced it to a great extent.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) came into picture in early 2000s separating content and design, allowing flexibility and convenience to web designers and content developers. At this point of time, consumer user-interface had become more important than other factors. Then Web 2.0 made the entry, revolutionizing the way websites have been designed. SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Multimedia applications and interactive content started making their way to web designing. With most of the businesses happening on the internet, every other business wanted to get noticed on internet. SEO came to the rescue here by optimizing the webpage in such a way that it gets ranked higher when a search is given on a search engine.

The way web design has changed over a period of time, has also given lots of opportunities to the employment sector.
